Installing GRUB using UBUNTU Live cd

Many people are having complaint that they are note able to boot ubuntu after reinstalling Windows XP . One possible method to overcome this is to restore your grub using a live CD.

  1. Set your BIOS to boot from a cdrom.
  2. Insert your ubuntu livecd and then reboot.
  3. When the OS is loaded open the terminal from Accessories .
  4. type "sudo -i " .Hit enter
  5. Then "grub" .Hit enter.
  6. Once started, GRUB will show the command-line interface. First, set the GRUB's root device to the partition containing the boot directory, like this: grub> root (hd0,0)
  7. If you are not sure which partition actually holds this directory, use the command find , like this: grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 This will search for the file name /boot/grub/stage1 and show the devices which contain the file.
  8. Once you've set the root device correctly, run the command setup (see setup): grub> setup (hd0) This command will install the GRUB boot loader on the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the first drive.
Now reboot your system and your trouble will be fixed.
